First Lady Michelle Obama rocked last night at the Black Girls Rock! Awards program on BET. We knew she would.
Dressed in a youthful, white, off-the-shoulder dress, FLOTUS said, among other things, that education is cool. She also declared, “Black girls rock! To all the young women here tonight, and all across the country, let me say those words again: Black girls rock!”
She continued, “No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, you are beautiful, you are powerful, you are brilliant, you are funny. Let me tell you, I am so proud of you. My husband, your president, is so proud of you. And we have such big hopes and dreams for every single one of you.”
Other highlights of BET’s annual televised program, created from DJ Beverly Bond’s non-profit organization, Black Girls Rock!, include Selma director Ava DuVernay’s Shot Caller award; Jada Pinkett’s Star Power award; Cicely Tyson’s Living Legend Award; Erykah Badu’s Rock Star award; Dr. Helene D. Gayle’s Social Humanitarian’s award; and Nadia Lopez’s Change Agent award.
And then there were the performances!
Singers Kathy Sledge, Alicia Myers and Cheryl Lynn did a medley of “We Are Family,” “Got to be Real,” and “I Want to Thank You,” – some of the best songs from the 70’s and 80’s – and had everybody on their feet. Jilly from Philly, Jill Scott, followed suit with her powerhouse voice and performed the soul-stirring ballad, “You Don’t Know.”
Estelle, who appeared on Empire this season, and Ciara also performed.
