In 2025 the Memorial Day will be held on Monday, May 26. It’s for us to remember and honor our men and women who died in the military. The day is a federal holiday, and many places are closed for the day. It also represents the start of summer for several families, too. It is a long weekend and people like to celebrate it with barbecues, vacation transfers, or spending time with family and pals. As events are planned, there are also folks who still need to make quick trips to the grocery store for food and whatnot.
What Stores Are Open?
The good news is that you do still have grocery stores open on Memorial Day. Stores such as Walmart and Target will be open through their regular hours. The last great thing about grocery shopping for the holidays is that you don’t have to remember to bring everything with you. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods will also be open, though their hours may vary. Of course, it’s always wise to check online or call first just to be sure.
Shoppers will also be able to head out to other popular stores, including Kroger, Meijer and Publix, on Memorial Day. But most of these stores are expecting to work normal hours. Some will shut early, so it’s probably best to buy earlier in the day. So if you absolutely must go to Aldi, for example, it will be open, but for a limited hours. Sam’s Club will also shut early — closing at 6 p.m.
Pharmacy and Store Differences
Grocery stores will mostly be open, of course, with varying degrees of available service. Hours of operation may be different at some in store pharmacies. Safeway, Albertsons and ACME stores will remain open but pharmacies for the stores may remain open fewer hours or even close for the day. If you need to pick up medicine just be sure to call ahead.
This includes stores like Jewel-Osco and Tom Thumb too. Stores will be open, but pharmacy hours may be affected, the chain added. Local hours are checked online or by phone and customers are urged to check. It also helps prevent surprises — if your local pharmacy closes, you won’t be caught surprised without your favorite prescription.
Stores That Will Be Closed
While most are open, a few stores will be shuttered for the whole day. The most well known is Costco, the store that will not be open on Memorial Day. If you go often then you should visit before or after the holiday. Other than that, you’ll be able to shop at almost every major grocery chain.
What About Sales and Deals?
Big sales are one thing you can expect on Memorial Day. Grocery stores aren’t exactly known for excellent discounts compared to clothing or electronics stores, but there are still good deals. Depending on your store, you’re sure to find low prices on grilling items, hot dogs, hamburger patties, buns, drinks, and more. You may also get snacks or frozen items on buy one and get one free deals. They’ll also have discounts on outdoor party supplies, paper goods, and beverages.
Walmart and Target specifically are expected to run Memorial Day specials in their grocery but also across the store. Clothing, kitchen and backyard furniture deals are included in these. This time of year provides a lot of people to save money and stock up.
A Day of Meaning and Convenience
Memorial Day is a day of honor and remembrance, but it’s also a day that families get together. While cookouts are still on, most stores will be open to help yo,u whether you are picking up a few things or hosting. Luckily, many grocery stores are open as normal and there are plenty of Memorial Day weekend deals, so you don’t have to worry about shopping and tidying your home this weekend.
