Award-winning cardiologist Lynne Valencia Perry-B?ttinger runs her own firm, Clinical and Interventional Cardiology, P.L.L.C.; teaches medicine at Columbia University and at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University; is a guest medical expert for the Today show and Black Entertainment Television; lectures nationwide on heart disease, and dreams of starting her own health talk-show soon. She speaks German, Spanish and French fluently, and can converse in five other languages. Named one of New York?s top doctors by several publications, she attributes her success to her parents, both medical doctors and owners of a medical clinic in Houston, and to her husband, Dr. Erwin B?ttinger, who ?realizes the importance of independence for me,? she says.
Perry-B?ttinger studied at Harvard College, Radcliffe College and Harvard University, earning an A.B. in Modern European/African History, and at Yale Medical School, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. As a Yale medical resident she spent two months researching skin tuberculosis and leprosy in India and two months at Harae Hospital in Zimbabwe, teaching residents and caring for patients. She served as chief medical resident, instructor and internal medicine associate at Yale-New Haven Hospital/Yale University Medical School, then moved to Baltimore, Md., as a postdoctoral clinical fellow in cardiology at Johns Hopkins University.
In 1994, Dr. Perry-B?ttinger made the transition to private practice, specializing in clinical and interventional cardiology. She also taught at Georgetown University Hospital, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefore Medical Center and the Jack Weller Hospital in the Bronx. New York Hospital eventually lured her away in 2000 to become assistant director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
The assassinations of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King and Black Power advocate Malcolm X had a powerful impact on her. ?I owe it to them to succeed,? she says. Her favorite quote: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
