A Kentucky mom is accused of smashing her 6-year-old daughter in the head with a hammer; she is currently charged with attempted murder. The incident occurred at the residence of the family, which they located at the 2900 block of Wilson Avenue in Louisville. Around 12.49 p.m., police officers of the Louisville Metro police department answered a call that informed them of a child aggressively beaten by her mother.

Upon arrival of the officer, they saw the young girl lying down on the ground in the house. She was severely injured in her head with numerous fractures of the skull and a brain hemorrhage. Emergency response teams rushed the kid to Norton Children’s Hospital, where she is admitted in critical condition.

Suspect Identified as Zeinab Abdi

The mother, who was Zeinab Abdi (aged 40 years), was arrested soon after the strike. She currently stands accused of attempted murder on domestic violence grounds. Abdi was read her Miranda rights, but according to the police report, she made a chilling confession. She confessed to hammering her daughter over the head a couple of times.

Abdi also explained to police that she usually becomes very angry and cannot keep her emotions in check. On the day of the attack, she reported that the anger subdued her to the extent that she beat her daughter, but she was not aware of the number of times she hit her daughter.

Son Tried to Stop the Attack

Abdi’s son, who is not shown to be of a certain age, was the eyewitness to the violent attack. As he stated to the police, he also attempted to physically subdue his mother to curb additional harm to his sister in the attack. The next thing he heard was appalling.

Abdi is said to have actually begged him to release her to go on with the beating as he held her back. She is reportedly quoted as saying, Let me kill her, as she tried to go back to her sorely wounded daughter. The intervention of her son probably saved the life of the young girl.

Community in Shock

News of the attack has stunned the Fulton neighborhood and beyond. Neighbors and local residents expressed their horror and disbelief after learning about the incident. Donald Edison, who lives nearby, said, “I think it’s just terrible. I don’t know what type of pressure the child’s mother is under for her to do something like that.”

Another neighbor, Brittany Lindell, told local reporters that the news gave her “cold chills.” She said the thought of such violence happening to an innocent child was beyond disturbing. “I don’t understand how someone could get to that point of anger,” she said.

Investigation Continues

Due to the severe nature of the injuries, the police department’s homicide unit is now involved in the investigation, even though the child has survived so far. As of Friday morning, the young girl remains in critical condition, and doctors are working to stabilize her.

Abdi is currently being held at the Louisville Metro Detention Center. Details about her bond were not released. She was scheduled to appear in court on Friday for her arraignment. Officials have not yet released the name of the child, and it is unclear who will take custody of the children involved in the case.

A Disturbing Reminder of Hidden Violence

This heartbreaking story is a reminder that domestic violence can take many forms and may happen where it’s least expected. Friends, neighbors, and family members often don’t see the warning signs until it’s too late. In this case, it appears that the mother’s mental health struggles and unaddressed anger led to a nearly fatal outcome for a defenseless child.

Authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances behind the incident. Meanwhile, many in the community are calling for support systems that could prevent such tragedies in the future.
