Americans are eligible for the $1400 stimulus check via the IRS Recovery Rebate Credit, the final day to claim is April 15, 2025. This is one of the third round of stimulus checks paid through the COVID-19 pandemic to support individuals and families. Many of those who could still claim the monthly benefit, the IRS estimates, have yet to receive their payments. If you didn’t qualify because you didn’t file a tax return in 2021 or never even thought to, you can still get this financial aid, but, you have to act fast.
Who Is Eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit?
You have to fulfill some key requirements to get the full $1400. First, you must be a US citizen or resident alien for the year 2021. Your eligibility to claim dependency on someone’s 2021 return depends on your circumstances and you possess an active Social Security Number. The IRS has set the same income limits for providing stimulus checks to all eligible recipients including single filers less than $75,000, heads of household less than $112,500 and married joint filers below $150,000. Your health insurance premium support will transition to zero once your yearly income drops to specific thresholds based on your filing status.
Why Didn’t Your Money Come?
Others were left out of the third stimulus check because they failed to file a 2021 tax return. Not all people had to pay based on their income level and were not necessarily aware they should file to claim the credit. Some might have had life changes like a drop in their income or a new dependent who made them newly eligible. And while some filing a return did not take the credit. If their information is in the IRS’s records, the agency has been sending payments automatically in those cases. Yet, if you never filed a 2021 return, you still have until April 15 to file it to qualify for the payment.

If you filed your 2021 return and didn’t receive the Recovery Rebate check but qualify to receive it, the IRS will automatically send a payment either through direct deposit or paper check. You can still file your return if you haven’t done so. Your 2021 return should be prepared and filed with the IRS Free File website (for incomes under $73,000) or by using a tax software provider. Specifically, you will have to fill out Form 1040 and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit. Make sure to send it on by the 15th of April 2025 to qualify. You’ll get it as a tax refund even if you are not taxed.
