Klaus Schwab, an entrepreneur and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF) officially stepped down yesterday. He announced his exit yesterday, Monday, April 21, 2025, and it came into effect straight away. This is a major leadership transition at the helm of one of the world’s most powerful economic institutions.

A Legacy of Over Five Decades

Klaus Schwab has been the public face of the World Economic Forum for the last 55 years. Under his direction, he transformed the WEF into a well-known platform upon which the best leaders in various industries gather to tackle world problems. Famously hosting the yearly Davos meeting, Schwab transformed an inaugural small economic conference into a global think tank of progress.

Schwab recently wrote a letter. Here he says that, “Following my recent announcement, and as I embark on my 88th year, I have concluded that I will retire as Chair and member of the Board of Trustees with effect immediately.”

Immediate Changes at the Top

In a rare Sunday board meeting, the WEF board approved Schwab’s resignation. Acting Chair in the interim will be Vice Chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe. In addition, a Search Committee has been established to look for a new permanent chair.

It is the first time in the history of the Forum that it will be moving ahead without Schwab at the helm. The shift comes as the world faces deep social, economic, and political transformation. The WEF board underscored the need for urgency and conversation in dealing with such complex global transitions.

Schwab’s Unparalleled Impact

Schwab’s influence on global discourse is hard to overestimate. During his stewardship, the WEF became a main facilitator of dialogue among governments, businesses, civil society, and academia. Davos was more than a yearly summit, it was an emblem of top-level collaboration.

In a statement, the WEF board praised Schwab’s relentless work. “He created the global premier platform for dialogue and innovation. The Board thanked him for his 55 years of relentless leadership at the Forum’s head,” it said.

Voices and Leaders at the Table

WEF trustees’ board comprises some of the most influential people in the world. Some of them include Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. It also has World Bank President Ajay Banga, WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde. Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam also sits on the board.

These board members have also exhibited firm support for continuing the Forum’s work without Schwab. The board asserted an important update. The board confirms that, at a time when the world is changing at a rapid pace, the imperative for inclusive conversation to navigate complexity and shape the future has never been more important.”

A Mission That Lives On

Despite the shift in leadership, the WEF has insisted that its purpose and values remain as they were before. The Forum continues to be a point of reference for co-operation, bringing insight and advice to policymakers and business leaders alike.

“The Board of Trustees underscores the need to remain consistent with its mission and values as a driver of change,” said the WEF in its statement. It also reaffirmed its role to bring people together from various backgrounds to share views and unlock potential.

A New Era Begins

While Schwab’s resignation marks the end of a colossal chapter, it also introduces fresh leadership and visions. His successor will have the responsibility of sustaining the Forum’s heritage while shaping it to a rapidly changing global scenario.

The world will be keeping a close eye as the WEF embarks on searching for its future leader. What it settles in the years to come will most probably shape the role of the Forum in world affairs for several years to come.

As Schwab steps aside, the WEF is at a crossroads, having a strong heritage in its pocket and having the mandate to reinvent itself to stay relevant in the evolving world.

In the Forum’s own words, “The need for inclusive dialogue has never been more critical.” And as a chapter closes, another one opens with the same goal: creating a better future through unity, dialogue, and shared responsibility.
