Ask K. Lynn Scott what she would most like people to know about her, and she would state that she strives to achieve her personal best every day; she is passionate about helping young women to achieve their personal best; and she is a firm believer in the therapeutic effects of pets on the physical and emotional well-being of humans.
“I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to breed puppies used as service animals and to train a therapy dog, which has been extremely rewarding,” she says. “If time and money were no object, I would love to train therapy dogs for wounded veterans.”
Scott is president of Aetna’s Professional Employer Organization (PEO) business, which leverages its relationships with PEOs to deliver health benefit solutions for small employers. PEOs provide small businesses with such services as payroll processing and workplace insurance coverage. Scott joined Aetna in 2007 as head of marketing strategy in the Public and Labor Segment of the company’s National Businesses.
She brought to this function her experience as director of strategy for a $2 billion print advertising and marketing services company, principal consultant for strategic change solutions for PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the experience of various insurance-related roles at Marsh & McClennan Companies and the firm now known as The Travelers Companies.
Three men helped to shape her professional ethics, she says: her father, Leonard Scott; Charles A. Ferguson Jr., former vice president of Marsh & McClennan; and her late uncle, James P. Scott, one of the first Black police lieutenants in the City of East Orange, N.J.
Scott has a bachelor’s in French/humanities from Providence College, R.I., and a master’s in business administration from Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. She has served on the Washington, D.C., Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and as a member of the Greater Hartford YWCA.
