Joseph Kling, 19, of Ocean Township, New Jersey, is in serious trouble over allegedly starting a huge wildfire that burned up the Pine Barrens. Kling lit a bonfire in the Forked River Mountains Wilderness Area, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said. The fire quickly got out of control after being improperly doused.
Bonfire With Pallets Ignited the Blaze
Authorities indicated Kling utilized wooden pallets to start the fire. The fire flared up and engulfed the forest quickly because it was dry. In a matter of hours, smoke was noticed billowing from the Cedar Bridge Fire Tower in Barnegat Township. That was approximately 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
Thousands Evacuated as Fire Spreads
Emergency units came into operation, but the fire had already started its rampaging. Fire engulfed everything, compelling evacuation of 5,000 Ocean and Lacey Township residents. Helicopters and ground firefighters labored throughout the day in an effort to contain the inferno.
More than 15,000 Acres Burned Down, Structures Ruined
As of Thursday morning, the fire had consumed about 15,000 acres. Authorities said that it is now 50% contained, but 12 surrounding structures are still in danger. At least one commercial structure was destroyed by the fire.
No Injuries, But Damage is Extensive

Kling Arrested, Awaits Court Proceedings
Kling was also arrested at Ocean Township Police headquarters. He has since been brought to the Ocean County Jail to await his hearing for detention. Prosecutors indicted him on counts of arson, a severe charge in light of such massive damage.

Experts indicate that the wildfire may be among the biggest in New Jersey in decades. Officials are ongoing with efforts to completely encircle the blaze. They, however, estimate that it might take until Saturday to completely put it out.
