Javon Kinlaw is the latest big name in NFL free agency to go to work for a team, and the Washington Commanders have made quite a move by signing him to a three-year, $45 million deal that includes $30 million guaranteed. Under new management, Washington is looking to rebuild and the agreement with Schefter reports further strengthens a weak defensive line. A former first-round pick, Kinlaw had a breakout season with the New York Jets in 2024 and that makes him a valuable addition to the Commanders’ roster.
Kinlaw’s NFL Journey: From 49ers to Jets
Coming into the NFL, Javon Kinlaw entered the NFL as the 14th overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, going off the board to the San Francisco 49ers. The defensive tackle was a good size, good strength and he was good at stopping offenses, but he was highly regarded. But his early San Francisco years were mired in injuries, including a torn ACL that kept him out of many games. It took over 4 seasons with the 49ers to get to 41 games with only 28 starts.
Kinlaw joined the New York Jets in 2024, where he delivered a fully healthy campaign. He played in all 17 games and had a career-high 4.5 sacks and more than 61 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. He was good enough that several teams picked up notice, but Washington was the team that picked up his services for the next three seasons.
Why Washington Signed Javon Kinlaw
Kinlaw’s Connection with Washington’s Front Office
Part of the reason for Kinlaw’s move to Washington is his connection to Commanders general manager Adam Peters. When Kinlaw was drafted in 2020, Peters was in the front office of the 49ers. Whether or not Washington took on simplicity for their success at the expense of familiarity, they knew exactly what they had in Gloria.
The Commanders’ staff and Peters believe Kinlaw has the skills to contribute depth and versatility to the team’s defensive line. Having been in both the starting and rotational roles, he is a strong asset for the team as they try to upgrade their front seven.
Strengthening the Defensive Line
Already strong on Washington’s defensive line are stalwarts Daron Payne and Johnny Newton. But after several offseason departures, the team required some extra depth. With Kinlaw’s arrival, the Commanders have another strong presence in the middle that helps to make up for another formidable defensive front.
Kinlaw has proved that he can be an impact player when healthy despite his injury history. Washington is looking to improve on a miserable season when it comes to stopping the run and putting pressure on the quarterback, and his ability to do that will be crucial.
It does not mean that the Commanders are done spending on their defence in the line, however. Free agents Sheldon Day and Jalyn Holmes are reportedly still in the discussion of re-signing to add additional depth and competition.
A Fresh Start for Kinlaw
This move is a fresh start and a chance for Kinlaw to lock himself in as a fundamental defensive contributor. He is 27 years old, and now is the time to prove that he made the Jets preseason spectacular as no one-year fluke.
Washington’s coaching staff will aim to get Kinlaw on the field, healthy and using his strengths. However, this signing could be one of the best value deals of the offseason if he can stay on the field and continue to produce like he did the past two seasons.
What This Means for the Commanders
Kinlaw’s signing fits into Washington’s front office further adding a newly assembled competitive roster. A move like that should certainly be welcome for a team looking to rebuild a disappointing defence, and Kinlaw is a proven interior lineman.
The NFC East, as always, is still a very competitive division with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys still ruling the division. If the Commanders plan on competing for a playoff spot, Kinlaw is going to have to come in and make an immediate impact, as a player.
