Jana L. Taylor, Esq.
Associate General Counsel
Radio One, Inc.
Silver Spring, Md.
Jana L. Taylor is grateful that her career allows her to indulge her passions for media and law. As associate general counsel for Radio One Inc., she handles legal matters in a field that focuses on entertaining and educating people, which affords her opportunities to help others. Taylor, who always enjoyed public speaking and helping others, initially found the idea of becoming a broadcast legal analyst appealing. “Court TV and attorneys like Star Jones were becoming very popular, and I saw that as an opportunity to blend both of my passions,” she says. In the Honors Program at Ohio State University, which she attended with a Carl Rowan Project Excellence Scholarship, Taylor started as a political science major but soon switched to broadcast journalism.
As a student in the broadcast program, she was the on-air personality, representing the school during nationally televised football and basketball games with the “Buckeye Halftime Report.” Upon graduation, and with encouragement from her family, she earned a law degree at Rutgers University School of Law. “Law school teaches you how to think like a lawyer, but it doesn’t teach you how to be a lawyer,” Taylor says. She learned from representing clients in private practice at large national law firms, and by providing assistance to friends in the entertainment industry. Ultimately, she became the go-to person for legal advice and assistance inside and outside of her work circle.
Taylor has an extensive record of community involvement through organizations such as America Needs You, where she served as a mentor and Young Leadership board member, and through membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., The Links Incorporated, Black Women in Entertainment Law, Black Entertainment & Sports Lawyers Association, Corporate Council Women of Color, Minority Media and Telecom Council, and the Council of Urban Professionals.
