The government is cutting Medicare reimbursement payments for nursing facilities by 11.1 percent starting in fiscal 2012.

Talbots Inc., up 61 cents at $4.07

A private equity firm acquired a 9.9 percent stake in the women’s clothing maker, saying its stock is an “attractive investment.”

HSBC Holdings PLC, up 79 cents at $49.66

The British bank will cut 30,000 jobs and sell retail bank branches in the U.S. It wants to focus on fast-growing emerging markets.

Peabody Energy Corp., down 84 cents at $56.63

The coal miner and steelmaker ArcelorMittal launched a $5.2 billion hostile bid for Australian coal company Macarthur.

Humana Inc., down $2.22 at $72.36

The health insurer’s profit rose 35 percent, and it raised its forecast for the year. But shares slid as broader markets declined.

The voice and data services provider will buy Paetec for $891 million in stock, expanding its business and broadband services.

First Niagara Financial Group Inc., down 33 cents at $11.92

A Stifel Nicolaus analyst said the bank is paying a “hefty price” to buy 195 U.S. retail branches of British bank HSBC.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., down $2.88 at $43.76

The Israeli drug maker said its oral multiple sclerosis drug candidate, laquinimod, failed a late-stage clinical trial.
