Greenland Historys Heirs

This July 24, 2011 photo shows sisters Aviaaja, 12, above, and Anna-Aviaq Henson Poulsen, 20, who are great-great-granddaughters of Matthew A. Henson, the black American aide to famed U.S. polar explorer Rear Adm. Robert E. Peary. Both Henson and Peary fathered sons by Inuit women in northern Greenland a century ago. Their scores of descendants have spread throughout Greenland and beyond, “exploring” their lives, in the words of one. (AP Photo/Brennan Linsley)
