Get ahead in your career with these smart tips.

Getting a promotion means more than just gaining a fancier title and taking home a larger pay. For most people, it means being appreciated for their talent and their contribution in the organization. However, like everything else, you need to work for it. No matter how good you are, a promotion would not just land on your lap. It just doesn’t happen that way.

So, how do you get yourself noticed by your boss? What should you do when you reached a career plateau? Here are some smart moves that can help you get ahead of the competition and put you in line for a promotion.

Know yourself. Know who you are professionally, take time to learn how others see you, and identify your goal right from the start. This can help you can determine the steps you need to take to get what you want.

Do the work.
Work consistently throughout the day and complete tasks assigned to you to the best of your ability. Organize your schedule to avoid rushing projects and don’t hand in substandard work. Do these and your boss will surely see that you are worthy of a promotion.

Be proactive. Never get into the habit of putting your feet up when you don’t have anything to do. Instead, ask co-workers if they need help with anything. This can show your willingness to take on additional work and prove that you are a real team player.

Take notes. Don’t rely on mental files, especially if you are taking instructions from your boss. Bosses hate going over directions more than once so always keep a pen and paper with you and take notes to make sure you get everything right. If you need to clarify anything, do it right then and there.

Challenge your supervisors.
If you don’t agree with your boss’s plan, start gathering the data that can help you make your point and bring the matter up directly with your boss. Do it right and you can surely impress your boss.

Keep your boss informed. Since your boss will ultimately be responsible for any mistakes or issues, you should keep him or her informed of any serious or constant problems in the workplace. You should also ensure your boss that you are on top of things and are doing everything to fix the problem. In addition, you should also keep your boss informed of your accomplishments on a regular basis.

Always attend office parties. Don’t alienate yourself from the people you work with and forego the chance of socializing with them. Be present at office parties and you can increase your chances of getting ahead of the competition.
