Gallery Furniture, a Houston institution and chain of furniture shops recently announced on Facebook that it will be closing its Post Oak Boulevard store. This was announced after 16 years of business. Local residents were made aware of the closure on April 2, 2025, in a personal Facebook post. The closure was announced after years of increasing expenses, neighborhood crime, and decreasing customer traffic. However, the company insists it is not indicating bankruptcy but they have announced
Why Is Gallery Furniture Closing Its Post Oak Location?
Owner Jim McIngvale, better known as “Mattress Mack,” attributes the shutdown partly to two issues: troublesome construction and more crime. He maintains construction of the Uptown Bus Rapid Transit line has largely hurt the region’s retail business. Added to that, burgeoning criminal activity adjacent to Houston’s Galleria Mall has discouraged the previously bustling spot from shoppers.
McIngvale told Furniture Today, “We’re looking for another location in that area that’s on the upswing, not on the downswing.”
Post Oak: Gallery Furniture’s Smallest but Most Loved Showroom
The Store Was Small, But Important
The Post Oak store was Gallery Furniture’s smallest showroom at just 30,000 square feet, originally a former Pier 1 location. The store had loyal local shoppers and carried high-end furniture. Its closure marks a strategic shift.
As we write this write-up, a definitive closing date has yet to be announced, it will reportedly follow a storewide sale. To the contrary, the chain is opening what it calls its “most Epic Blowout Sale ever.” It will come with 30% to 70% reductions on all its furniture in its three stores and online.
No Bankruptcy for Gallery Furniture – Just a Strategic Move
In contrast to other chains such as Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and The RoomPlace, Gallery Furniture is not going bankrupt. McIngvale emphasized that this is a restructuring, not a pullback. No layoffs have been announced, and the company’s two other stores means the one in North Freeway and Richmond, Texas will stay open and functioning.
In a posting on their website, Gallery Furniture said they are very thankful:
“An enormous thank you to Gallery Furniture’s beloved Post Oak customers. You’ve been the heart and soul of this journey, and Gallery Furniture couldn’t have done it without you!”
Furniture Industry Struggles: A Widening Retail Trend
The closure fits a larger trend. For the past two years, the furniture business has been slammed. With increasing home values, increased interest rates, and overall inflation, consumers are wary of shelling out for high-ticket items. Retailers across the country are taking the hit.
Familiar brands such as Progressive Furniture and The RoomPlace have already gone bankrupt and closed locations. But Gallery Furniture is taking a different route: adapting, not collapsing.
What’s Next for Mattress Mack and Gallery Furniture?
McIngvale indicates a new Houston store is already in development, although he hasn’t disclosed where or when. He wants to locate in an up-and-coming area where business can revive itself again.
Until that time, customers can still see Gallery Furniture’s bargains online and at the surviving stores. The mission goes on just not on Post Oak.
