COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) ? The mayor of Columbus, Ga., is none too happy her community was named America’s “brokest city” by an online news organization, and she wants the story deleted.
The Daily Beast, which published the rankings Tuesday, said they were based on unemployment rates, median household income and average debt.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (http://bit.ly/rTH9En) that Mayor Teresa Tomlinson sent a letter to Newsweek/Daily Beast LLC, saying the analysis was “recklessly designed to damage” the Georgia city and its residents.
An Associated Press request for comment left with the online publication Thursday was not immediately returned.
Other cities in The Daily Beast’s top 10 were: Harlingen, Texas (2): Beaumont, Texas (3); Greenville, N.C., (4); Medford, Ore., (5); Bakersfield, Calif. (6); Mobile, Ala., (7); Tampa, Fla., (8); Chico, Calif. (9); Augusta, Ga. (10).
