FDA Issues Tomato Recall Over Salmonella Risk: Two different brands of tomato, out of precaution, are being recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to protect public health due to potential salmonella contamination. The recalled products are products from both Ray & Mascari Inc. and Williams Farms Repack LLC that cover areas in 14 states. So far, there have been no reports of illness, but the possibility of having some exposure is something to act immediately on; the consumers are admonished.
Affected Brands and Distribution Areas
The recalled products are Ray & Mascari Inc. four-count vine-ripened tomatoes and are packaged and distributed to Gordon Food Service Stores in several states, including New York, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, Ohio, and Wisconsin. On the Ray & Mascari packaging label, Ray & Mascari Inc. is marked as the packaging label, and the product was packaged in a clear plastic clamshell.
Brevig supermarkets and Hy-Vee grocery markets in southwestern Minnesota and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, are included in the second recall for Williams Farms Repack LLC, which is a tomato supplier to wholesalers in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia from April 23 to April 28, 2025. The source responsible for the contamination at that time was Hanshaw & Caping Farms of Florida for Ray and Mascari Inc.
Symptoms and Health Risks of Salmonella
The bacterial contaminant Salmonella commonly causes serious gastrointestinal illness. Most commonly, there is fever, bloody diarrhea (sometimes), cramps and nausea, sometimes vomiting. While the infection is severe and sometimes fatal in some high risk groups (infants, elderly, or immunocompromised), most people escape healthy and require no medical treatment.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Friday it is recalling two types of tomatoes out of an alleged precautionary measure, because they may contain salmonella. Ray & Mascari Inc. and Williams Farms Repack LLC. However, no illnesses have been reported, but it is still recommended that they take action immediately to prevent possible exposure.
Affected Brands and Distribution Areas
The first recall is of four count vine ripened tomatoes packaged and distributed by Ray & Mascari Inc. The Ray & Mascari Inc. label is written on the packaging and packaged in clear plastic clamshells.
The second recall is concerned with tomatoes that were distributed to wholesalers in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia from April 23 through April 28, 2025. The notification originated with Hanshaw & Caping Farms, in Florida and explained that Ray & Mascari Inc. had reason to believe the contamination that potentially occurred at their facility.
Symptoms and Health Risks of Salmonella
Salmonella is a common contaminant of salmonella that can cause serious intestinal illness in humans. Symptoms include fever and diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. You will usually recover without any treatment, but the infection can cause serious or even fatal illness for some (such as in old people and babies, and indeed anyone who is not fully immune). Complications are rare but serious: arterial infections, endocarditis, and reactive arthritis.
