Last month, Yityish Aynaw, an Ethiopian Jewish immigrant to Israel, was crowned the first-ever black Miss Israel.?
The only black contestant in the pageant, Aynaw has lived in Israel since the age of 10 and attended an Israeli boarding school. She was quoted as saying she was proud to represent the country ?just like any other Israeli.?????
After her win, she accepted President Obama?s invitation to the official state dinner in Jerusalem.?
Some Ethiopian-Israeli officials see Aynaw?s victory as another milestone towards improving the relationship between Ethiopians and Israelis. Last year, Israel appointed its first Ethiopian-born ambassador. And this year, Israel elected its first Ethiopian-born woman to parliament. Others say, there is much more work to be done.
