Musk’s Exit Expected by May 30

Billionaire entrepreneur and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that he will step down as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) by the end of May, as is required by federal regulations that set strict limits on how long special government employees have in power. The role was created by former U.S. President Donald Trump in January to slice federal spending and boost government efficiency, and Musk was tapped to do that. While his departure was expected due to legal requirements, his departure has created speculation between him and Trump of possible tensions.

Trump Confirms Musk’s Departure

‘The exit was planned from the beginning, ‘ Trump said recently about Musk’s departure. Trump was, nonetheless, speaking to reporters, saying, ‘At some point he’s going …’ I can keep him as long as I can. He’s a very talented guy.” In a recent interview, Musk also admitted that his time span was limited to 130 days and he had confidence he would do most, if not all, of his work, including trying to cut $1 trillion in federal spending, before he left.

Speculation of a Fallout Between Musk and Trump

According to Trump and Musk, both confirmed that Musk’s temporary stint was the case, but some have also suggested that it corresponds with underlying tensions. Politico first reported that White House officials thought that Trump would seek to extend Musk’s role beyond the regulatory time limit. But government representatives quickly quashed any of this speculation.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded by calling such claims garbage and stating Musk was always going to depart. She also said that both Trump and Musk publicly declared that they would serve no more time on DOGE once their work there was finished.

Musk’s Impact on Government Policies

In the short time that he was DOGE, he has radically changed policy on government spending cuts. As the leader across the major federal agencies, he put pressure for significant budget reductions on the Department of Education, the Social Security Administration, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The public backlash, protests stemming from these measures were also part of the reasoning behind the measures. Between those two points, some groups accused Musk of putting corporate interests ahead of public welfare, while others supported his dashing approach to financial efficiency.

His budget cuts even caused violent demonstrations, and protesters attacked Tesla vehicles in acts of vandalism. Such attacks were described by the Trump administration as ‘domestic terrorism’, and enhanced security was put in place to protect government property.

Musk Dismisses Resignation Rumors

In the light of a sea of rumors, Musk has strongly denied that he is leaving voluntarily. He posted on X (formerly Twitter): such claims are fake news, and that his departure was solely due to the regulatory time limit.

Musk is going to leave that government office, but it is still not clear if he will be allowing huge influence on policy from his private office. Whether praised or criticized, his participation in government affairs has been unarguably impactful during his stint as DOGE chief, though it may not be illustrious.
