Elizabeth City State University, one of the Historical Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU),
maintains a student-centered environment and approach to learning. ECSU is one
of the accredited African American universities to offer courses in a number of
fields. Like many black colleges, ECSU has alumni of notoriety such as Larry
Johnson, Sr., and Johnnie Walton, who have gone on to be recruited by
professional ball clubs.
