Tom Hanks appeared in a comedic SNL sketch as a supporter of Donald Trump wearing a red MAGA hat. His character named Doug apparently freaks out when Kenan Thompson’s “Black Jeopardy” host goes for a handshake. The sketch received severe backlash on social media from the Republicans. Many accused all Trump supporters of being portrayed as racist in the sketch. Don Lemon in the podcast mentioned he gets all the bad things about the administration. Lemon Calls Huge Number Of MAGA Supporters Racist
Mahen responds to the sketch saying “It is just not helpful that half the country, that’s where they are.” Lemon later replied saying part of it is comedy. However, he also added that according to him a huge [number of MAGA supporters] are [racist]. In addition to that, he also said even if they’re not, you actually have to overlook a lot to support Trump. He thinks this might just be even more egregious than just admitting they are racist.
Maher’s Take On Lemon’s Statement
Maher admitted on his podcast that Trump has actually shown racist behaviors in the past. He mentioned incidents like the Central Park Five and questions raised over Obama’s birth certificate. However, he stood on his grounds saying ascribing his worst traits to all the people who support him is unfair. This is especially true after considering the recent election results that showed half of the country supports him.
Lemon’s Response To Maher
Maher responded to Maher saying that he doesn’t think half of the country is racist. He also added that he doesn’t think all the MAGA supporters are racist either. However, according to him, a huge element of the MAGA party is racist whether or not they are conscious of it. Lemon continued saying many of them are not racist and in case they are not, they have to overlook a lot of racism as well as bigotry. He said if one does that and says they are okay with this, it makes them worse than admitting they are racist.
Others’ View On The SNL Sketch
Apart from the Republicans, some of the Democrats also found the SNL50 sketch controversial and unfair to MAGA supporters. One of them was Joy Behar who is the co-host of “The View “ She said in her statement that the sketch made anyone who supports Trump look like a racist. Joy added that she would never personally as she doesn’t believe in a group being one thing. She also claimed many of the MAGA supporters were misled. Trump promised many other things like Medicaid and Social Security which he did not fulfill. Racism is not the only thing that brought him to office. She added how calling them all racist is definitely insulting.
