Dallas has come up with an ambitious plan to renovate the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in order to attract bigger events in the coming years. According to the reports, the renovation plan will cost the city a total of $3.5 billion. Out of this amount, the Dallas City Council will have to approve a loan worth $1 billion to start the renovation process this summer. The huge price tag of the renovation plan has already raised some concerns in the city council. If you are someone who wants to know more about Dallas considering a $1 billion Convention Center renovation, the following article is for you.

What Do We Know So Far About The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Renovation Plan?

A total of 15 members of the Dallas City Council, this Wednesday, displayed a three-dimensional model that showcased the downtown skyline and the layout for the new downtown convention center. In addition to that, the event services department also displayed around six updated renderings showing the grand hall, including stunning views of the skyline through large glass walls. However, in order to begin the renovation work on time for the center to serve the FIFA World Cup International Broadcast Center, a short-term $1 billion loan is required. The Dallas CFO, Jack Ireland, mentioned that the loan is not required because there is a shortfall of $1 billion. However, this loan is just interim financing till they arrange a long-term loan.

What Did Jack Matthews And Rosa Fleming Say About The Renovation?

Jack Matthews, who is currently serving as the President of Inspire Dallas, mentioned that the money that will be spent on the convention center in the coming months will be for FIFA and getting the first part of it razed. In addition to that, the money will also be spent on ordering steel for the renovation work. Therefore, it basically means they are getting ready for fixed prices for almost a year.

Rosa Fleming, who is currently serving as the director of Convention and Event Services, stated that they understand the amount of steel and other products they are going to need. Therefore, in order to hold the pricing before it starts to rise because of the tariff war, they need to order it now.

What Are The Concerns Being Raised In The Dallas City Council Regarding The Renovation?

Several members of the Dallas City Council, including Cara Mendelsohn, have raised their concerns about the debt the city has on the convention center that will be destroyed. She raised questions on how the city still owes $700 million on the Omni, as in $270 million for the convention center. Mendelsohn accepted that the new convention center is a good project for the future of the city. However, she also mentioned that the council should get a definitive cost estimate. She mentioned that the entire goal of having this was to set a cap. But the council is just witnessing the numbers increase.
