Ahead of the 2025 NFL season, the Cleveland Browns are in the news because of the fiery quarterback battle going on in Berea, Ohio. Since Joe Flacco wishes to continue playing, rookie sensation Shedeur Sanders wants to do well, and with Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel included, the Browns are in a quarterback competition that could make the season and maybe their future

Joe Flacco: The Veteran Leader Still Hungry to Start

At age 40, Joe Flacco decided to test himself against younger talent, rather than giving advice as a coach. A brief comeback with the Colts and helping the Browns get to the playoffs after Deshaun Watson got injured has convinced Flacco that he’s not through playing. In his interviews, he made it clear he is going after the starting spot, saying, “I want to win this job and I’m going to have a great season.” And then go do it again and again.

Flacco says teamwork is helpful, but he plans to keep working toward his goals rather than handing off his role. Because of his learning curve, experience, and confidence, he may be given the starting job in Week 1, especially since Watson’s recovery is in question.

Shedeur Sanders: Legacy, Pressure, and Promise

Here comes Shedeur Sanders, the offspring of Deion Sanders and one of the most exciting new prospects in the league. Being chosen in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Sanders joins the Browns with a lot of buzz and great expectations. While selected in the late rounds, Elijah Hurter’s time playing college ball, his height, and social media presence bring him attention. Compared with Dillon Gabriel, he’s done well in OTAs, giving a glimpse at the excellent player he could be.

He won’t be sure of playing in the league until shortly. Because Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel, and Watson are all in the quarterback room together, the air is very competitive. Despite the challenges, Sanders is getting attention for his good ball handling and easy ability to learn new skills. In addition, having his name means he has to live up to the past while defining himself as an individual.

Deshaun Watson: The Uncertain X-Factor

Deshaun Watson is the biggest factor still affecting the quarterback competition. The Browns’ next decisions are colored by his current status and chances of a successful recovery. If the team gets a healthy and effective Watson, the entire picture of the competition could change. Because of Watson’s recent injuries and the team’s eagerness to progress, the situation around him is still blurry. So long as the outcome is unclear, the coaching team must remain ready with anyone who might gain the start.

A Quarterback Room Packed with Possibility

Pittsburgh has also added Kenny Pickett, who was a top pick last year, and Dillon Gabriel, a pick made from the same draft as Sanders. If Pickett can get back to the strong QB he was at Pittsburgh, he can help, but Gabriel has not yet shown much in early practices. Competition is very high, and all quarterbacks have different abilities, allowing coaches to experience a wide range of talent.

It is clear from Kevin Stefanski and the Browns that this year’s team is still being formed. All the reps players put in during minicamp and preseason will be important. The pressure on the team to find the right quarterback is at its highest, due to their 3–14 record from the last season.

What’s at Stake for the Browns

This quarterback competition is more than a headline—it’s a high-stakes decision that could define the Browns’ next era. Flacco represents experience and stability. Sanders offers hope and upside. Watson, if healthy, remains a wildcard talent. The Browns are not only choosing a starter—they are laying the foundation for the identity of the team in 2025 and beyond.

As OTAs roll into training camp, all eyes will be on Cleveland. Whether Flacco holds on, Sanders rises, or Watson returns, the outcome of this battle will shape the Browns’ season—and possibly determine the trajectory of the franchise for years to come.
