Civil Rights Pioneer Olivia Ferguson McQueen Receives Her Diploma ? 54 Years Later

Olivia Ferguson McQueen Gets Diploma 54 years laterIn 1968 in the midst of the civil rights movement, 16 year-old Olivia Ferguson McQueen was forced to finish out her senior year of high school not in the classroom with her classmates, but confined to one room of the school where she received one-on-one tutoring. Though she completed the work needed to graduate at the all-white Lane H.S., she was denied her diploma due to racist policies.

In spite of the school?s refusal to award her the diploma, McQueen went on the receive a bachelor?s degree from Hampton University and a master?s degree from Trinity College.

Now at the age of 71, McQueen gets her day in school.
