BEIJING (AP) ? China’s Foreign Ministry is defending the government’s Internet censorship, saying it meets international norms. as U.S. questions whether the practice is an unfair trade barrier.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu did not directly respond Thursday when asked about the U.S. questions over censorship. Instead Jiang says that China regulates the Internet to ensure its sound development, which she says is international practice.

Jiang says China objects to using the issue of Internet freedom to interfere in China’s affairs.

The U.S. said Wednesday that Washington was using World Trade Organization auspices to seek information on how China censors the Internet. American companies have complained about being blocked, hurting their competitiveness.
