Isaiah Fields was assigned as a caretaker for a 43-year-old woman suffering from Rett Syndrome at Marklund’s Hyde Center near Geneva. He was responsible for bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding and other care of the victim. The woman was reportedly living in the center for over  20 years. She was unable to read, write, talk, or consent to sex in any way. In the month of April 2024, she was sent to the hospital for a liver and gallbladder test. How Was Fields Proven Guilty?

After the woman was diagnosed with preeclampsia, the doctors had to perform a cesarean section on her the very next day. She gave birth to a baby boy who was then admitted into the neonatal intensive care unit. Her mother revealed her medical condition caused her to have a distended abdomen. This is possibly the reason why her pregnancy remained masked for so many weeks. The newborn spent around 11 weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit. However, he did not manage to survive and left the world in July 2024. However, his DNA matched Fields, determining he was guilty.

What Happened In The Court?

During the hearing, prosecutor Matthew Rodgers said that the baby did not live long but definitely delivered justice to her mother. The baby’s DNA was compared to three workers at the center and matched with Fields. The prosecutor also mentioned how if she wouldn’t have been pregnant, no one would have known she was assaulted. The 23-year-old caretaker was then jailed for 25 years on charges of sexually assaulting and impregnating the disabled woman.
