Know when it’s time to part ways with a client
While breaking up with a client is always hard to do, there are certain times when you absolutely need to get out of the relationship. So, how do you know when it is time to quit and part ways? Here are some telltale signs that may indicate that you shouldn’t be working with your client any longer.
You are not getting the proper treatment. There is absolutely no excuse for bad behavior so if your client is treating you poorly, then it’s time to get yourself out of the situation. Refund your client according to your contract terms and don’t look back. You can always get a better client next time.
Your client is demanding too much from you. Have you ever worked with a client who wants to do things solely on their terms without giving any due consideration to your own set of rules and business policies? Needless to say, working with such people can be quite an impossible and unrelenting job.?
So, be wary when such clients start asking for special considerations on a fairly regular basis since this can ultimately hamper your overall productivity. Know when it’s time to say “no” and be consistent with your policies. Now, if the client is really getting really quite impossible to deal with, then it’s time to consider planning for an exit strategy.
You are earning less than what you are worth. If you are not earning what you are worth, then it’s time to take a more in-depth look at the situation to see if you can afford to continue working with that particular client. Try negotiating for a raise or see if there is a way to streamline your functions. If these don’t work out, then it’s probably time to consider ending your relationship.
You are not doing what you want to be known for. It is so easy to fall into the trap of accepting jobs that you can do ? especially if it helps pay the bills. However, there will come a point in your career when you would rather be doing something else for your clients. What should you do when this time comes? Well, the best thing that you can do is to honor the commitments that you have previously made but make it clear that you may not be able to do it for the long haul. ?
Do not, in any case, leave your client hanging in mid-air. Give them sufficient notice and prepare everything they need in handing off the work to another resource. This will show your professionalism and help build your reputation.
