Brazil court tells politicos to hold off on tweets

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Brazil’s top election court says that candidates in upcoming municipal elections have to muffle their tweets until the official start of campaigning.

The Supreme Electoral Court says Friday on its website that candidates can only start using Twitter for electoral purposes on July 6.

The first round of Brazil’s nationwide municipal elections is scheduled for Oct.7 and the second round on Oct.28.

The court’s ruling comes in response to an appeal filed by a vice-presidential candidate in 2010.

The candidate was fined 5,000 reals ($2,800) for using Twitter as a campaign tool two days before the official start of that year’s presidential campaign.
