Apple customers who used Siri may be running out of time to get the $95 million settlement payout. The due date for filing is July 31, 2025 (allowed is just 30 days for submitting before the door closes forever). The settlement addresses a class-action lawsuit that accused Apple of recording users via Siri at times when it should not have been doing so without the proper consent.
Who Qualifies for the Payout
The settlement applies to most Apple device owners in the United States who used Siri from October 2011 to June 2022. That wide net includes anyone who owned just about every Apple device from the 4S on up (including the fourth-gen iPad and newer), as well as those who owned a HomePod, a Mac capable of Siri, and an Apple Watch within that same timeframe.
How Much Money Can You Get
Every person with a valid claim will get between fifty and two hundred dollars, depending on how many people eventually file claims. The payment figures will not be determined until after the submission deadline, so administrators can tell how many valid submissions there were in total. Eligible claimants will get paid through several means, such as paper checks, PayPal transfers, or Venmo deposits, and after an approved claim is paid, everyone eligible will get an email alerting them to the payment.
Simple Process for Filing Claims
It is easy to file a claim, and it does NOT take a long time. Claimants require a few things, such as their Apple ID email address, device serial numbers (if possible), and typical contact information. The total time on the submission is usually under five minutes for most users.
Background of the Legal Settlement
The class-action lawsuit that resulted in the settlement alleged that Apple violated California privacy laws by recording and storing Siri interactions without proper user awareness or consent. Those recordings were reportedly taken even when Siri was inadvertently triggered. Apple, which denied any wrongdoing, settled the case to avoid costly and protracted litigation and made a series of privacy enhancements.
Changes to Siri Privacy Practices
Apple also took steps to strengthen privacy safeguards for Siri as part of the settlement agreement. The company added clearer opt-in language for use of Siri, stopped holding on to audio recordings by default, made it easier for users to delete their Siri history, and improved technology to reduce unintentional activations of the voice assistant.
Checking Claim Submission Status
Many claims were filed by users months ago when the original notices went out. Individuals who want to confirm whether their submission was processed can go to the settlement website and type in their claim ID or an email address that was used to file the form. Currently, the website is also available to find the latest estimated payment timing and claim processing status.
Warning About Potential Scams
The officials have strongly warned the claimants to be cautious about scams related to the settlement. It is also important to remember that no claims can be carried out in exchange for payment or fees; all claims can only be submitted online via the official settlement website, and true claims administrators will never call requesting banking or other personal information.
Eligibility Without Current Device Ownership
Previous Apple device owners may still submit claims even if they don’t have their older devices anymore. Serial numbers are useful for verification, but are not a requirement for a successful claim. Approximate dates of purchase plus Apple ID details are usually good enough.
Expected Payment Timeline
When the July 31 deadline passes, settlement administrators will enter into the multi-step work of ensuring each claim is legitimate, determining how much is owed to each investor, and getting money out. The majority (98%) of approved claimants can expect to receive their payments by November 2025, unless any legal appeals are made about the settlement agreement, which would, in effect, delay any payments.
