New York City
Angela Brock-Kyle has always been a hard worker and strategic thinker. Her inclusive approach to problem solving has been a valuable asset in her corporate career. ?I?m excited by the challenge of leading a team to address an urgent issue or to exceed a stretch goal,? says Brock-Kyle, a senior leader at Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA-CREF) who completed her 24th year with the firm last year. As a TIAA-CREF managing director, Brock-Kyle successfully led the company into new investment sectors, served on the asset management leadership team and championed the adoption of risk management practices in the organization?s retirement, life insurance, endowment and trust businesses.
Brock-Kyle attributes her dogged pursuit of excellence to her parents? commitment to education ? her mother was a teacher and her father inspected nuclear power stations ? and cultural awareness. She grew up in Oakland, Calif., during the tumultuous era of civil rights and Black awareness. ?Expanding our range of opportunities required striking the right internal balance,? she says. Clifton Wharton Jr., former CEO of TIAA-CREF, was a mentor and source of inspiration because of his shared passion for people. ?Wharton was committed to doing what was good for the business and elevating diverse contributors along the way,? she says. Brock-Kyle remains dedicated to helping others advance.
Inspired by her husband and son, Brock-Kyle enjoys tennis, golf and skiing with family and friends. She divides her spare time between reading, traveling, which includes charitable work in Haiti, and indulging in her appreciation of the performing and fine arts. Brock-Kyle is a member several financial service industry organizations and serves on the board of the United Way of Westchester and Putnam counties. She received a bachelor?s degree with honor from California State University at Hayward, and juris doctorate and M.B.A. degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles.
