NEW YORK (AP) ? American Express is promising surprise gifts to cardholders who shop online this holiday season.

To participate in “The Gift Chain,” Amex says cardholders simply have to register their cards, then spend at least $25 online at a participating store between now and Dec. 21. Among the retailers are American Eagle, Bed Bath & Beyond, Dell, Neiman Marcus, Nike, Pottery Barn and Zappos.

After a cardholder makes a purchase, they’ll immediately be emailed a notification with details on how to redeem their surprise gift. The gifts vary depending on the retailer and include $2 gift cards to Dunkin Donuts, $5 statement credits and $250 American Express gift cards.

To get a detailed sense of the type of gifts that are available with each retailer, go to https://giftchain.amexnetwork.com/rules and scroll down to the charts for each merchant.

In some cases, recipients will also be given three additional gifts they can share with friends on Facebook. Those friends do not have to be Amex cardholders or be registered with “The Gift Chain.”

Amex says that nearly $20 million will be given away, and each cardholder is eligible for up to 10 gifts. But the company notes that it’s only while supplies last. Cardholders can also enter to win a gift without making a purchase. After registering an Amex card online, cardholders mail a piece of paper with their name, address, phone number, email address and the name of the retailer from which they’d like to win a gift to AMEX Holiday Gift Chain – Free to Participate Request, P.O. Box 4900, Fenton, MO, 63099.

Also note that some of the gifts may come with conditions. For example, a cardholder may receive a $50 statement credit, but only if they spend a certain amount at a retailer by the end of February.

To register a card, go to https://giftchain.amexnetwork.com . For accounts with multiple cards, each card must be enrolled separately.
