FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? American Airlines has joined other large U.S. airlines in adding $6 per round trip to tickets between the U.S. and Europe.

A spokesman for AMR Corp.’s American confirmed the increase Friday.

Delta Air Lines Inc., United Continental Holdings Inc. and US Airways Group Inc. had already raised prices this week after the European Union began a program of charging airlines for greenhouse-gas emissions if they fly within, to or through Europe.

Those are the four largest U.S. airlines that fly to Europe.

Germany’s Deutsche Lufthansa AG also told passengers to expect higher prices as it passes along the cost of buying carbon-emissions credits.

The U.S. and China have objected to Europe’s expansion of an emissions-credit trading system to global airlines.
