Aircraft Carrier USS Harry Truman is the United States Navy’s eighth-class aircraft carrier. It was named after Harry S. Truman, the 33rd president of the United States. The Aircraft was launched on 7th September 1996 by the Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, Virginia. Moreover, on 25th July 1998, it was commissioned by Captain Thomas Otterbein in command. Furthermore, President Bill Clinton was the Keynote speaker at that time. Along with this, other notable attendees and keynote speakers include: Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan, Missouri representative Skelton, Secretary of the Navy John H. Dalton, and Secretary of Defence William Cohen. 

USS Harry Truman: Description 

Within the Navy, USS Harry Truman is also known as HST. The aircraft is 257 feet (78 m) wide and 1,092 feet (333 m) long. Along with this, its height is 244 feet (74 m) , almost of a 24-story building. Moreover, the supercarrier has a flight deck 4.4 acres ( 1.8 ha) in size and it can accommodate around 90 aircraft. Furthermore, four elevators ( 3,880 sq ft i.e., 360 m² each) are used to move planes between the hangar bay and the flight deck. Apart from this, the aircraft can accommodate 6,250 crewmembers and displaced almost 97,000 tons. The HST uses two Mark II stockless anchors each weighing 30 tons. Moreover, these Mark II stockless anchors come from the USS Forrestal. Each anchor chain weighs 360 pounds.

Moreover, this aircraft carrier was positioned in the Mediterranean to protect American interests in the Middle East after Iran’s missile barrage on Israel. Along with this, the USS Harry Trumans aircraft carrier was also involved in a missile strike against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

USS Harry Truman was operating in the vicinity of the port On Wednesday, 12th February 2025. Moreover, suddenly it collided with the Merchant Vessel Besiktas – M off the coast of Egypt at 11:46 p.m. It collided when it was operating near Port Said in the Mediterranean Sea. According to US Navy sources, no injury took place in this collision. Moreover, after the collision, the Aircraft was inspected but there has been confirmed damage. Furthermore, according to FOX News its propulsion plants are also unaffected. The naval officials have said that the aircraft’s overall health is stable and safe.

On Wednesday, the Aircraft Carrier USS Harry Truman collided with the Merchant Vessel Besiktas-M. However, the reason for this sudden collision is not confirmed. Moreover, an investigation is going on. According to the U.S. Sixth Fleet, the carrier was carrying 5,000 crew. The US Armed Forces has been facing several problems in recent days. Just before this tragic incident, two US Navy Pilots were shot down over the Red Sea in December 2024. However, according to reports, it was a friendly fire. Along with this, the pilots were safely ejected from the damaged aircraft and there were no casualties. Furthermore, according to previous reports, one pilot faced some minor injuries. Apart from this, the Houthis have also claimed that these attacks on ships were carried out with human support. 

U.S Navy’s Sixth Fleet Statement 

After the collision, the U.S. Navy Sixth Fleet stated that the aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman collided with a Merchant Vessel on Wednesday night in the Mediterranean Sea at 11:45 p.m. local time. It was operating in the vicinity of a port, in Egypt. Moreover, the officials said that the collision happened when the carrier was about to enter the Suez Canal to transit back into the Red Sea. Furthermore, the collision took place between two beasts:

  • 100,000- ton Aircraft Carrier USS Harry Truman
  • 53,000-ton Merchant Vessel Besiktas – M ( A Panamanian-flagged cargo ship) 

Damages After the Collision Between the Aircraft Carrier USS Harry Truman and the Merchant Vessel Besiktas-M

According to the U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet, Truman is safe and in stable condition. Moreover, aircraft’s propulsion plants are also unaffected. The aircraft was powered by four propulsion systems and two nuclear reactors. Furthermore, the Merchant Vessel Besiktas – M was slightly damaged. The Ship is under its own propulsion.
