ERIE, Pa. (AP) ? Aaron’s Inc. wants a federal judge in Pennsylvania to dismiss a lawsuit alleging that the furniture rental chain installed spyware on rental computers.
A Casper, Wyo., couple has sued Atlanta-based Aaron’s, an Aaron’s franchisee and an Erie-area software firm. The couple says a computer they rented last year had software that enabled the computer to take photos of them in their home.
The Erie Times-News says attorneys for Aaron’s deny the chain had the software installed on the computers rented by corporate-owned stores. The company says that was apparently done only on computers rented out by a franchisee that controls the Wyoming store.
Attorneys for the franchisee and DesignerWare, of North East, Pa., have previously defended the software as a legal way to remotely shut off non-paying customers’ computers.
