Victoria D. Fleary
Director of Digital, WBLS/WLIB at Emmis Communications
Music enthusiast and digital media maven Victoria D. Fleary says her role as director
of digital for WBLS/WLIB at Emmis Communications gives her the best of both worlds, under career guidelines laid down by her immigrant parents. ?Haitian parents really only want to hear that you?re going to become a doctor, lawyer or engineer, and I had no intention of doing any of those,? Fleary recalls. ?But, they also said to me, ?Listen, if you get your degree, then you could do whatever you want.??
Fleary earned a bachelor?s in psychology, with honors, from Pace University then followed her passion for digital media. She taught herself multiple Web programming languages and the finer points of design and landed her first Web developer job at Vanguarde Media. Two years later, she joined Emmis Communica-tions as digital brand manager to take the Hot97.com and 987Kiss.com websites to the next level. After nine years at Emmis, she took the position of director of the interactive department at WBLS/ WLIB, where she established their interactive department and helped engrain a 24/7 social media cycle based on individual on-air personalities. ?If they are on the air, they are encouraged to post the station?s social media outlets and reach our audience. There?s never a dull moment on our social portals. Our engagement is unmatched in this industry.?
Mentoring young, aspiring lady-leaders in all aspects of life is very dear to her. She participates in various programs at work and through the programs put on by the Epsilon Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., of which she is an active member. ?Mentorship is an important part of any meaningful life.? The upcoming generations need to learn all the finer points of being progressive, proactive and responsible citizens,? Fleary says. ?The returns are lasting and amazing.?
