Margo Ferrandino, Esq.

Deputy General Counsel, Labor?

and Employment

N.Y.C. Department of Housing Preservation and Development

New York, N.Y.

Age: 38

Margo Ferrandino?s first job, at 13 years old, was delivering newspapers. Raised by her father, she remained employed throughout middle and high school, during which time she learned so much about labor and the workplace that she was inspired to pursue a career in law, focusing on labor and employment issues. True to that calling, she earned a bachelor?s degree at the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University and a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law.?

Today, Ferrandino is the deputy general counsel of labor and employment at the New York City Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD), the country?s largest municipal housing preservation and development agency. She assumed this position on April 13, after serving just a few months as the department?s assistant commissioner of equal employment opportunity (EEO), and almost four years as the EEO assistant commissioner at the N.Y.C. Fire Department. As EEO assistant commissioner, she ensured compliance with the language and the spirit of the city?s citywide EEO policy.?

Ferrandino calls upon the biblical passage ?No weapon formed against me shall prosper? (Isaiah 54:17) to get her through rough times. ?When I experience personal or professional challenges, I repeat this Scripture and without fail, feel reinvigorated and empowered,? she says. Ferrandino is involved in community activities through organizations such as Practicing Attorneys for Law Students Program and the Association of Black Women Attorneys, once serving as president of the latter. ?I hope to do more community service that allows me to interact with middle and high school students,? she says. ?Professionally, I am open to any and all opportunities that allow me to grow as a labor and employment attorney and make a positive impact on the workplace.? Secretly, however, she dreams of attending culinary school in southern Italy, home of her father?s roots.
