Corporate Vice President, Office of Governmental Affairs (OGA)
New York Life Insurance Co. ?
New York, N.Y.
The one thing Judy E. Hopkins, J.D., would do with enough time and money is ?live in a foreign country and reinvent herself.? For now, she is a corporate vice president at New York Life?s Office of Governmental Affairs, advocating the company?s position on key legislative and regulatory issues to policymakers and national and local trade associations, with a view toward preserving the integrity of the insurance marketplace.?
Licensed to practice law in New York, Hopkins received a Juris Doctor from St. John?s University School of Law following a bachelor?s degree in journalism and political science from New York University. Prior to her current appointment, she practiced law in New York Life?s Office of the General Counsel for 12 years, advising on privacy and data protection issues and compliance with Anti-Money Laundering and Office of Foreign Assets Control laws and with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. ?
Hopkins co-founded New York Life?s pro bono legal program and is a member of the leadership team of the company?s African-American Employee Resource Group, serving as its co-chair for the past three and a half years. She has been instrumental in the company?s diversity effort by working through the resource group to create professional development programs to help African-American employees acquire the requisite leadership skills for promotion. She also participates in the group?s Ladders Program by mentoring and coaching African-American junior management employees.
In service to the wider community, Hopkins performs pro bono legal work for the Pro Bono Partnership; teaches public speaking skills to 4-H Club students, for which she received an award; and volunteers with the Lupus Alliance and other charities. She quotes novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne: ?Happiness is a butterfly which, when pursued is always just beyond your grasp but which, if you sit quietly, may alight upon you.?
