DeNora Getachew exemplifies what it means to beat the odds. ?At 17, the Bronx, New York, native became a single mother, but went on to earn a bachelor?s degree at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a Juris Doctor at Fordham University School of Law. ?Becoming a single mother at a young age provided me with a sense of focus and determination that I did not realize I possessed until that point,? Getachew recalls. ?This has humbled and sustained me as I navigate my life?s course.??
Getachew currently is the campaign manager and legislative counsel at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law, where she develops and directs national advocacy campaigns relating to democracy matters, such as voter registration modernization and campaign / political funding initiatives. Previously, Getachew served as the policy director for Public Advocate (now Mayor) Bill de Blasio. She also held positions with New York City?s Citizen?s Union and the New York State Trial Lawyers Association.?
A wife and mother of three, Getachew is passionate about helping youth. To that end, she serves as vice chair of Manhattan Community Board 7 and on the board of Union Settlement, and volunteers with the Greater New York Chapter of The Links Inc., as well as with the New York Junior League. ?My inability to say ?no? when asked to volunteer for ?one more thing? stems from my strong commitment to supporting opportunities for young people to overcome their adversities,? says Getachew.?
Getachew enjoys traveling to de-stress and has visited countless islands throughout the Caribbean and French Polynesia. ?I try to live life to the fullest, but sometimes that can feel extreme,? she explains. ?I work my hardest and then unplug to find calm, most often on a beach. I?m just like everyone else, trying to find balance.??
