It’s been 40 years since New York Rep. Charles Rangel first won his congressional seat. And he’s not done yet.
Rangel formally announced his re-election campaign Sunday. The Democrat made the announcement surrounded by a host of elected officials, including Gov. David Paterson.
Rangel was first elected to the House in 1970. He defeated Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr., who had been a pastor and civil rights leader.
Now Rangel is facing a challenge from Powell’s son.
Rangel relinquished his chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee in March after being admonished by a congressional ethics panel for taking corporate trips to the Caribbean in violation of House rules.
His diminished clout on Capitol Hill helped draw a challenge from other candidates.
