The 2025 Ford Explorer ST 4WD answers the call for families craving a three-row SUV that doesn’t compromise performance, cargo space, or tech. With its twin-turbocharged V6, refreshed design, and sport-tuned chassis, the Explorer ST stands out in a crowded segment by blending practicality with genuine driving thrills. After a week behind the wheel, it became clear this SUV is well-suited for hauling large families and spirited drives around town.
Power/Performance: At the heart of the Explorer ST is its 3.0L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, delivering 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, paired with a responsive 10-speed automatic transmission and intelligent 4WD. Ford claims a 0–60 mph time of just 5 seconds, and it feels every bit that quick, thanks to shorter final-drive gearing and paddle shifters for manual control.
On twisty roads, the ST’s sport-tuned suspension and rear-wheel-drive (with available 4WD) make it surprisingly agile for its size. The steering is weighty and communicative, while the brakes inspire confidence during hard stops. The six drive modes, Normal, Eco, Sport, Tow/Haul, Slippery, and Trail, adapt to everything from highway cruising to rough city streets.
Interior/Exterior: The 2025 refresh brings a taller grille, slit-like LED headlights, and a broader lower fascia, giving the ST a more aggressive stance. Inside, the cabin is a leap forward with soft-touch surfaces, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and a 13.2-inch horizontal touchscreen running Ford’s new Digital Experience infotainment system.
Additional features include ambient lighting with seven colors, a drop zone shelf with wireless charging, and a Bang & Olufsen 14-speaker stereo system.
However, some cabin plastics feel budget-friendly, and the third row is best reserved for kids.
Tech/Safety: The ST packs Ford’s latest tech, including: BlueCruise 1.2 – Hands-free highway driving (90-day trial, then $495/year), Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist with adaptive cruise, lane-centering, and a 360-degree camera. A built-in Google Assistant reduces reliance on using the phone.
Models/Pricing: The 2025 Explorer ST lineup offers five different configurations:
- Active ($39,755): 2.3L EcoBoost I-4, RWD standard.
- ST-Line ($44,515): Sporty looks, BlueCruise optional.
- Tremor (Pre-orders): The off-road version will launch later this year.
- Platinum ($51,655): Luxury focus, optional V6.
- ST ($55,855): 400 horsepower V6, sport suspension, standard 4WD.
Fuel Economy: The fuel efficiency is respectable for the class, with the EPA rating the ST at 18 city/24 highway mpg, a testament to Ford’s efficient turbocharging.
