Below are 2011 returns, and three- and five-year average returns, for the largest stock mutual funds, based on assets. Many of these funds are commonly found in 401(k) plans and other workplace savings accounts.
By comparison, the Standard & Poor’s 500 index finished the year almost exactly where it started. With reinvested dividends, the S&P 500 had a total return of 2.1 percent.
