Hon. JaDawnya C. Butler

Hon. JaDawnya Butler
Municipal Court of Atlanta
Atlanta, GA.
Age: 37

Judge JaDawnya C. Butler was appointed to the Atlanta Municipal Court in 2015, becoming its ninth and youngest judge on the Court at the time. Commenting on that accomplishment, she refers to a fond childhood memory. “My parents taught me very early on that age is not a predictor of knowledge, wisdom or compassion, but a life well and fully lived is.”

Prior to her appointment, Judge Butler served in various divisions of the Office of the Fulton County District Attorney as a chief senior assistant district attorney. She graduated with a double major and honors from Spelman College and obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law, where she earned the highest grades in several of her classes and served as the student commencement speaker. Upon graduation, Butler established The Butler Law Group LLC, in Atlanta, practicing solo for five years. As a member of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys and previously its president, she created the national award-winning Judicial and Public Office Academy to train and encourage African-American women to run for office. She also created the Trial Master Boot Camp to improve the professionalism and quality of practice of local lawyers. Butler is widely acclaimed for her service to both her profession and her community. However, she acknowledges, “Integral to it all is my faith, family and integrity.”

Butler enjoys speaking to and encouraging youth. “I’ve had a front-row seat to the many poor decisions our youth make and the hefty consequences that follow. I’d like them to remember that they are far more powerful and talented than they could ever imagine. My message would be: “Just go for it! Put in the hard work; reap the reward, and spend time giving back to your community so that others can do the same.”
